JC Go Bush With WSMTB

On Sunday a few of our Junior Cyclist guinea pigs ventured out to Western Sydney Mountain Bike track in Yellomundee. Between the four of them, only one had ever ridden off-road (once), and none of them ever in a race.

Yellomundee is located at the foot of the mountains. The air was crisp and the riders were nervous.

Julia navigated the bush to complete six laps. Alex raced with the under 13 boys and girls on a larger circuit to take 4th.

Sophie and Jono had the extra challenge of the adult course. Both kids had practiced the U13 course thinking they would simply do more laps for the U15 race. Instead they were confronted with boulders at least a metre high which they descended on foot. A bridge had to be traversed on foot as Sophie felt she might fall into the river below.

The kids were challenged physically and mentally in a race they had never experienced before. The kids ended the day with a good old sausage sandwich before the long drive home.

A big ups to the WSMTB volunteers and coaches who make these events happen. It was well run and supervised from start to finish. Also, a big thanks to the JC Mechanic, Ian Watson, who set up the kids the night before with a collection of bikes and for taking us out there.

  1. I rode with the kids for 1/3 a lap, they did very very well, very polite , rode within there limits and rode to the finish! Well done to both

  2. It is a massive step between the U13s trail and a complete loop of the XC trail. Bear in mind next month with the State Series the Jr A, B and C loop won’t have the tech challenges mentioned in the blog. Well done and thanks for coming out. See you on the 17th. http://www.wsmtb.com/nsw-junior-series/
